On Thursday Chris and I went to another dinner at the Hilton. Luckily this dinner was just business attire. The mean wasn't quite as fancy, but still good. Chris and I actually felt that the dessert was yummier at the less formal event. It had more flavor.
This dinner was to honor various baseball players in the Houston area. They honored a coach of the year from Bellaire high school and 12 high school players from around the Houston area. Then they honored several of the major league players. One of the players they honored was James Loney from the Dodgers. He is from Houston and therefore qualifies for these awards. They also gave Wesley Wright an award for rookie of the year. Other honorees were Hunter Pence, and Lance Berkman. The presentations started out slow and boring, but once the presenters - generally sports announcers and writers from the area- started presenting to the players it got funny. Two of the broadcasters started taking shots at each other during their presentations. One of them really doesn't like the other one, but most people don't know that. Then the players gave their speeches and those continued to make us laugh. Berkman gave some truly uplifting hope to the high school players. Oh, wait, no he didn't. He basically told them a career in baseball wasn't going to happen. We were all cracking up because he sounded so harsh.
It was fun seeing a different side of the players. Chris is going to Mexico with several players and a coach at the end of the month and I am going to expect a full report on what was said and done while he spends so much time with them. I am always more interested in what these guys are like as people than their stats on the field. For instance, I find it interesting that Jose Valverde, our closer, takes his wife and child with him on every road trip. He says he doesn't want to miss a moment of his child's life. The event was fun and I enjoyed a free meal and some laughs with my husband.
